The Back Story:

Cape Florida

The Cape Florida lighthouse is located at the southernmost tip of Key Biscayne, in what is now the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. The current tower was first lit in 1846. It was the second tower to be built at this location, the first one having been destroyed in the Seminole War of 1836. Its lighting apparatus was destroyed in 1861 during the Civil War. The light was re-established in 1867, but then deactivated in 1878. The state of Florida acquired the lighthouse in the 1960s.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
