The Back Story:
Plum Island
Plum Island is the location of the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The current lighthouse including a 50-foot tall granite two-story dwelling was built in 1869 to replace its 1827 predecessor. In 1978, the old lantern was replaced by an electronic flashing light mounted on a brick building. Since the year 2000, a continuous effort has been made by the East End Lighthouses organization to restore and reactivate the Plum Island Lighthouse.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
