The Back Story:
Port Washington Breakwater
The first Port Washington Light was built in 1849 atop a hill overlooking the harbor. The light served to identify Port Washington, but when the piers were extended in the 1870s, it was decided a new light was needed as a guide through the narrow opening between the piers. A wooden tower was placed at the end of the north pier in 1889. In the 1930s, this new metal art deco tower replaced the wooden tower at the end of the north pier atop an open-arched foundation.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
