The Back Story:

Portland Head

The Portland Head lighthouse was built, at the request of George Washington, in 1791. It marks the entrance to Portland Harbor on Casco Bay in Maine. It is one of only four colonial lighthouses still standing. It was raised to its present height of 80 feet after the civil war. Portland Head was autoomated in 1989 and remains an active aid to navigation.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org)
