The Back Story:
Sanibel Island
The Sanibel Island Lighthouse is one of the most frequently visited lighthouses in Florida. Situated on the very Eastern tip of a crescent shaped barrier island called Sanibel, the lighthouse is also surrounded by a wildlife refuge. The Sanibel Island lighthouse is over 120 years old. The light was first lit on August 20, 1884 and automated in 1949. This lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a current aid to maritime navigation.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
