The Back Story:

Sombrero Key

Sombrero Key Light is the tallest skeletal lighthouse of the six currently in the Florida reefs. As with the other skeletal towers along the coast, Sombrero Key has survived some of the mightiest storms to hit Florida. This is because of its skeletal design which allows the winds and surf to pass through it. It’s 142 feet above sea level and was automated in 1960. This lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a current aid to maritime navigation.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
