The Back Story:

St. Augustine

St. Augustine was the site of the first lighthouse in Florida. The first lighthouse was actually a converted Spanish watchtower. The current lighthouse was built in 1874.  Its diagonal striping is similar to that of the Cape Hatteras, NC lighthouse. The lighthouse was electrified in 1925 after being fueled first by lard oil and later by kerosene. It was automated in 1955. It became the property of St. John’s County in 1970. A massive restoration effort was undertaken in the 1980’s.  The lighthouse and museum are open to the public.
About The Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
