The Back Story:

Tybee Island

The current lighthouse at Tybee Island is actually the fourth lighthouse at the site. This tower was built in 1866.  The lower 60 feet of the previous lighthouse became the bottom of the 154 foot new tower.  The lighthouse was electrified in 1933. In 2001, it was one of the first lighthouses to be made available under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. It is now owned and operated by the Tybee Historical Society. It remains an active aid to navigation, with the Coast Guard handling the responsibility for maintenance of that equipment.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
