The Back Story:
Watch Hill
A watchtower and a simple beacon were first established at Watch Hill by the Rhode Island colonial government around 1745, yet the first official lighthouse wouldn’t be built until early 1808. The Light was a 35-foot round wooden tower with ten, whale oil lamps. It would serve until 1856 when a new 45-foot lighthouse was built, farther back and away from the eroding shore. The light was automated in 1986 and still remains an active navigational aid..
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
