1937 Indian Head Coin
The Back Story:
Buffalo Nickel
Classic Americana, this five-cent piece was minted between 1913 and 1938. Sculptor James Earle Fraser suggested its motif, combining an Indian warrior in profile and a powerful bison, both symbols of the fading West. Each design fills its side of the coin, with a minimum of wording. It’s still a favorite of coin collectors, and often used in fashioning Native American and Western jewelry.
Although the Indian was a composite of several studies, a handful of Native Americans earned a meager living in appearances at county fairs in the 1920s through the 1960s, claiming to be the Indian on the nickel.
