The Back Story:

Mothers with calves will gather in nursery herds, usually consisting of two or more infants and/or juveniles and their mothers moving or browsing together. A newborn giraffe is about 6 ft tall. Within a few hours of birth, the calf can run around and is indistinguishable from one a week old; however, for the first two weeks, it spends most of its time lying down, guarded by the mother.
Their coat pattern provides camouflage when they are hiding. A mother has a strong maternal bond with her calf. Calves suckle for 13 months and continue to associate with their mothers for another 2–5 months.
