The Back Story:
Seeking Piece and Harmony
A dove carrying a twig from an olive tree in it’s beak is a universal symbol of peace and harmony among people and nations around the world. In most interpretations, the bird is the winged messenger that ferries the olive branch (or peace offering) from one group to another. Thus, the phrase “extending an olive branch of peace” implies an important gesture in treaty negotiations.
The imagery originates from the Biblical story of the aftermath of the Great Flood when Noah sent a dove from his ark across the water seeking dry land. When the bird returned carrying an olive branch, Noah knew that the flood waters had receded.
