The Back Story:
The Magnificant Elephant
These multi-ton creatures, one of the largest mammals on earth, are direct descendants of the extinct mastodon and mammoth. Elephants are known for their intelligence, memory and long lives – 70 years or more.
The elephant’s trunk, its most distinguishing feature, is a union of the mouth and lip, a tool used for reaching food, a siphon for placing water in its mouth and a snorkel for submerged breathing while crossing deep rivers.
Asian elephants have been used to haul lumber and clear land for 4,000 years, while the African elephant is more plentiful in the wild. Their voracious appetites for plant forage (combined with shrinking habitat) plus the ivory poaching trade have put both species on the endangered list.
