The Back Story:
Hoover Dam
• A National Historic Landmark named in honor of U.S. President - Herbert Hoover.
• Formerly called Boulder Dam, located in Black Canyon on the Colorado River, at the Arizona-Nevada border. Constructed from
1931 to1936 during the Great Depression.
• 726 ft. high and over 1,200 ft. along the crest of
the Dam. Over 4 million cu.yds. of concrete.
• The dam, power plant, and reservoir are
owned and managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation.
• The 17 main power generator turbines have a capacity of over 2,000 megawatts, producing on average about 4 billion kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric power each year.
• Hydroelectricity is clean, renewable, free from air pollution, chemical run off or toxic waste and is beneficial to the environment.
