The Back Story:
Who Is Kokopelli?
On many walls in the southwestern desert, dating back over 3,000 years ago, we find the figure of the humpbacked flute player, Kokopelli (a Hopi name). A wanderer, for sure, and a man of strange powers, compensating for his deformity, there are many myths of this famous figure. One is that where he traveled he brought the change of winter to spring; the hunch on his back depicting sacks of seeds and songs he carried. His flute is said to be heard in the spring’s breeze, while bringing warmth.
Legend portrays him as a fertility figure, healer and story teller. Villages would sing and dance throughout the night when they heard his flute, upon which the next morning, worthy maidens in the village would be with child. Whatever the true meaning of Kokopelli, he has been a source of music making, dancing and joy to those around him.
