The Back Story:
Labrador Retriever
Country/Date of Origin: Newfoundland / 1870s
Pedigrees of the modern Lab exist back to 1878, making it one of the oldest recognized breeds. Believed to have originated on the island of Newfoundland, which is now part of Canada, the Lab is the result of selective breeding between the now-extinct St. John’s Water Dog and the Newfoundland, and other native water dogs. Initially called the Lesser Newfoundland or the St. John’s Dog, the Earl of Malmesbury and other English breeders gave it the name Labrador to avoid confusion with other breeds. Today, the English and American lines are somewhat different; the English type is shorter and stockier, while American breeding has created a dog of a bigger frame.
