The Back Story:

The Liberty Plane

The two-seater deHavilland DH-4 was the “workhorse” of the U.S. Army Air Service during and after World War I. The plane’s non-rotary engine produced a top-speed of 198 kilometers per hour (124 mph) and had a range of 400 miles.
Although the DH-4 served as a daylight bomber and artillery spotter over Europe for only four months in 1918, its pilots and gunner/observers received four of the six Medals of Honor awarded to aviators during the war. After the war it became the principal aircraft for U.S. airmail service. Other notable DH-4 flights include Jimmy Doolittle’s recording-breaking transcontinental flight in 1922, and the first successful air-to-air refueling in 1923.
