The Back Story:
Amelia Island
When the Great Cumberland, GA lighthouse was dismantled, much of its building materials were used to build the Amelia Island lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed in 1838 and has a granite spiral staircase. In 2001, the lighthouse became the property of the City of Fernandina Beach, who subsequently received a state grant to restore the lighthouse. The restoration was completed in 2004.
About the Artist:
Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a publication of the
U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
