The Back Story:
Watch Hill
Life was not always easy for the Lake Champlain light station; this Second Empire style lighthouse was built in 1871, on Colchester Reef, to caution ships of nearby shoals with its sixth-order Fresnel lens. In its hay day, it would house many lightkeepers, witness the birth of a baby and undergo frequent repair due to storms and icy winters that were an ongoing threat to the lighthouse. Decommissioned in 1933 the lighthouse was abandoned and fell into disrepair until 1952 when it was purchased by the Shelburne Museum and relocated to the museum grounds, where it now resides.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
