The Back Story:

Race Rock

Race Rock is located at the west end of Fishers Island and the eastern entrance to Long Island Sound, New York.

This Gothic Revival styled Lighthouse marks the site of many shipwrecks. The light was built between 1871 and 1878, designed and engineered by Francis Hopkinson Smith and Captain Thomas Albertson Scott.

The Iight has a fourth-order Fresnel lens in a tower standing 67 feet above the water. The U.S. Coast Guard automated Race Rock Light in 1979.

About The Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a
publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
