The Back Story:
Pensacola
The lighthouse at Pensacola was lit for the first time in 1858. It replaced an earlier, smaller lighthouse at the same location. As happened with many lights, the lens was removed from the tower during the Civil War. In 1863, the lighthouse was refitted with a fourth-order Fresnel lens and re-lit. In 1869, the fourth order lens was removed in favor of the larger first order lens. The lighthouse was automated in 1965. It remains an active aid to navigation and is periodically opened to the public.
About The Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society
(www.uslhs.org).
