The Back Story:
Rose Island
The 35-foot tall lighthouse went into service on January 20, 1870. The light lost its importance as a navigational aid with the construction of the Newport Bridge in 1969. After it was decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1971, the lighthouse was leased for a time to the University of Rhode Island for use as a marine research facility. Through age and vandalism the station began to wear, but thanks to Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation, the building was eventually restored to its original appearance.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
