The Back Story:

Split Rock, Minnesota

In 1905, a punishing November gale claimed the ships, the Edenborn and the Madiera, as well as five others within a dozen miles of the Split Rock River. The tragic sinking of these ships fueled the demand for a lighthouse.
A structure was designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham and was built by the United States Lighthouse Service on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
The fog signal building and lighthouse were completed in 1909 and both were commissioned the following year in 1910. For over 100 years, the keepers at Split Rock have warned ships away from the rocks and the treacherous North Shore.
