The Back Story:
Thimble Shoal
The first Thimble Shoal Lighthouse was a six sided screw-pile light erected in 1872 and lit on October 15th of that year. In 1880, a fire destroyed the wooden lighthouse leaving only the iron work. The new caisson structure was installed in 1914. It is three stories tall and the light stands 55 feet above the water. In 1964 this light was automated and remains as an active navigational aid.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
