Jack of Spades - Playing Card
The Back Story:
Jack of Spades
The Jack of Spades is one of only three figures drawn in profile (thus, “one-eyed”) making it useful for declaring variations in some card games. The Jack was originally called the “Knave” (or Servant) but its abbreviation (Kn) was thought to be too similar to the King (K) and eventually evolved to today’s name. Tradition plays a role in the design of standard playing cards.
Today’s “court” (or face) cards first appeared in decks designed in France. Theories about which famous personalities from the past are depicted in a modern deck’s 12 face cards abound, but none is proven. Every card enthusiast – players, collectors, gamblers and card trick performers alike – has their favorite image.
