The Back Story:
Polar Bears - (Ursus Maritimus)
These mythic icons of the Arctic live on the sea ice and in the water along northern continental coastlines. Polar bears are well-suited for their lives as semi-aquatic marine mammals, with thick pads on their feet, insulating blubber and fur that gives them camouflage and protection from the cold.
Their range is limited by the availability of ice floes from which they hunt their primary food source – seals, whales and young walrus. A mother polar bear will feed her cubs until they reach two or three years of age, and protect them aggressively from predators and human intervention. Polar bears are endangered, their numbers dwindling along with the large expanses of ice pack on which they live.
