The Back Story:
Historic Route 66 - "America's Mother Road"
From its birth in 1926, combining pieces of existing roadway, until official decommissioning in 1985, US 66 was the most fabled road in the U.S. highway system. Stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles for 2,448 miles, it carried many people west, among them, migrants fleeing the Dust Bowl drought of the 1930s. The highway, which was not paved end-to-end until 1937, brought increasing traffic—and with it, prosperity—to the small towns through which it passed.
In addition to the “Mother Road” title it was given by John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, other nicknames for US 66 include “The Main Street of America” and “The Will Rogers Highway.”
