The Back Story:
Texas Symbology
The physical size of the state and the bigger-than-life attitude of some of its inhabitants has led to the saying that “Everything is bigger in Texas”. As such the Texas State symbols have their own rich history that reflects the Texas State of Mind.
1. The Lone Star: The “lone star” is, in fact, an older symbol predating the flag which was used to symbolize Texans’ solidarity in declaring independence from Mexico. It is still seen today as a symbol of Texas’ independent spirit, and gave rise to the state’s official nickname “The Lone Star State”.
2. Longhorn: A strong, bold and unique breed of cattle and their epic struggle between man, and the elements - from this grew the romantic legends of the Western Cowboy on the Texas plains.
3. Texas: “Tayshas” is the Caddo Indian word for friends or allies. This is also why Texas is the “friendship state.” Texas is not as many believe a Spanish word.
