The Back Story:
The Iditarod Trail
“Mother of the Iditarod”, Dorothy G. Page conceived the Sled Dog Race as a way of preserving Alaska’s traditions it’s heritage plus celebrating its Centennial in 1967. It wasn’t until 1973 that this race would make its first historic run from Knik to Nome.
In 1983 the starting line was moved to Anchorage. At the outset the race was thought to be a ludicrous idea, sending mushers out into the Alaskan wilderness. But the first year 22 sled dog teams finished and since, there have been a total of over 400 finishers, coming from Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Japan, Austria, Australia, Sweden, Russia, Czechoslovakia and the United States.
