The Back Story:
"Tiger Tiger, burning bright in the forests of the night ..."
The intense gaze of the Panthera tigris, so aptly described by English poet William Blake (1757-1827), conveys the essence of these powerful and graceful creatures. Tigers are the largest of the cat family, weighing up to 600 lbs. and 13 feet from nose to tip of tail, depending on the subspecies.
Tigers are fiercely territorial and solitary animals, except for females with cubs. They are nocturnal hunters and will travel for miles to find prey. Native to eastern and southern Asia, tigers are threatened anywhere they come in contact with humans as victims of poaching and destruction of their habitat. Tiger protection programs, notably India’s successful Project Tiger reserves, are successfully turning the tide against extinction of the wild tiger.
