The Back Story:

A Bold "First" At Kitty Hawk

The 1903 Wright Flyer was the first successful powered, heavier-than-air aircraft, and was based on Wilbur and Orville Wright’s experience testing controlled flight with gliders. On December 17, 1903, an overcast day in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the brothers made four brief, low-altitude flights, taking off from a launching rail. The longest one lasted for 59 seconds.
The aircraft was a biplane configuration; its pilot lay on his stomach on the lower wing to steer. The Wright Flyer’s lightweight, flexible frame was constructed of spruce, and covered with muslin. Its hand-made twin propellers were powered by a simple four-cylinder, sprocket chain-driven engine that was reminiscent of bicycle chain technology.
