The Back Story:
Coral Reef Marine Life
Fishes inhabiting coral reefs in oceans around the world share a delicate balance of survival. The variety of marine life that thrives on a healthy coral reef is astounding. Unfortunately reefs, unique self-sustaining and complex marine ecosystems, are greatly affected by pollution, over-fishing and climate change.
Well-known illustrator Don Blanding (1894-1957) chose an intricate image of graceful fishes gliding next to a healthy coral reef as one of the pottery motifs he designed for Vernon Kilns circa 1940. Now a Hawaiiana collectible, this illustration is a beautiful reminder that while these spectacular underwater environments have survived on Earth for more than 50 million years, they are today increasingly threatened.
