The Back Story:
The Original Beach Boy
Surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968)
put the sport in the public’s eye as he traveled the world following his gold-medal freestyle swimming performances at the Olympics in 1912 and 1920. Performing on his 10-foot redwood plank, he won fame for his athletic prowess, yet was also admired for his grace, humility and good sportsmanship.
Duke was among the last of the original Hawaiian natives, and honed his surfing and swimming skills on the beach at Waikiki. He is widely considered the father of modern surfing because his demonstrations made it popular. On beaches around the world, wherever surfers gather to share the thrill of riding waves, Duke’s spirit of camaraderie and fellowship lives on among members of the surf-riding tribe.
