Golden Gate bridge
The Back Story:
An Engineering Wonder and National Treasure
Perhaps the most recognizable suspensior sapn in the world, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge has been an icon of the city's skyline since it opened in 1937. The bridge carries auot, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between the northern tip of the San Francisco peninsula to the Marin headlands, across a narrow strait of water 400 feet deep. High winds buffet the bridge and strong currents swirl below as ocean tides flow in and out of the bay four times each day. The bridge is 1.7 miles long and its deck is approximately 245 feet above the water. Crews work year-round touching up the bright vermilion paint that is visible to passing ships in even the heaviest fogbank.
