The Back Story:
World's Rarest Wild Goose - (Branta sandvicensis)
The Nene (Hawaiian Goose) is found only on the islands of Maui, Hawaii and Kauai. Its name comes from its soft “nay-nay” cry while it feeds on grasses, leaves and berries. This is a land bird that does not fly, and over time this species has developed strong feet with reduced webbing that enables it to scramble over the rough landscape of the lava fields in which it lives.
At one time these wild Hawaiian geese were plentiful, but lax hunting restrictions and predators decimated their population until there were only about 30 birds left in the wild by 1952. Now a protected species, Hawaii named the Nene as its official state bird in 1957, and their numbers are increasing.
