The Back Story:
Ka Hae Hawai’i - (Flag of Hawaii)
The official standard of America’s 50th state is as colorful as its history suggests. It is the only U.S. state flag that has flown to represent a land and its people under several forms of government: an independent kingdom, a territory, a republic and a state. Its unusual design includes the British Union Jack, symbolizing Hawaii’s historical relationship with Great Britain as a protectorate. Eight horizontal stripes of red, white and blue represent Hawaii’s eight main islands. The flag was commissioned in 1816 by Hawaiian King Kamehameha who brought the islands together as a sovereign nation to earn recognition by the world’s major powers. Hawaii’s traditional flag is a colorful and special souvenir of a visit to this island paradise.
