The Back Story:
The Pennsylvania Dutch
The German speaking peoples who settled in the Southeastern region of Pennsylvania in the early 18th century and their descendents are called the ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’. It was others outside of their community, however, who coined the term ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’. They had heard the word ‘Deutsch’ used by the newly arrived immigrants when they described themselves. Those neighbors had no knowledge of the newcomers’ native tongue and that ‘Deutsch’ means ‘German’. Thus, the ‘Pennsylvania-Germans’ have mistakenly been known ever since as the ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’.
