The Back Story:

Assateague

Built and lit in 1833, the Assateague Lighthouse is located on the Virginia portion of Assateague Island. The tower is 45-feet tall, stripped in red and white. In 1933, the lighthouse was converted to electricity replacing the oil fueled candle lanterns it once used. The Assateague Lighthouse has warned passing ships and local waterman of the shallow waters off Assateague Island for many decades and remains an active aid to navigation, today.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
