The Back Story:
Block Island North Light
The current Block Island North Lighthouse was built in 1867 after two earlier structures succumbed to erosion. The lighthouse was electrified in the 1940s, automated in 1956 and deactivated in 1973. Eventually the building was sold to the city of Shoram, RI. It has been restored and now operates as a museum.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
