The Back Story:
Block Island South Eastern Light
The Southeast Block Island Lighthouse was built in 1875. It is the highest lighthouse in New England. It is designated a National Historic Landmark. It was deactivated in 1990 by the Coast Guard. In 1993, it was moved 360 feet to escape the eroding cliff. In 1994, it was re-established as an active aid to navigation.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
