The Back Story:
Gay Head
The Gay Head Lighthouse stands in one of the most picture-friendly locations in New England, atop the
130-foot multicolored clay cliffs at the western shore of Martha’s Vineyard. The light stands 47 feet tall (57 feet to the top of the lantern). It went into service November 18, 1799. The light was fully automated in 1956 and currently an active aid to navigation.
About The Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a
publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
