The Back Story:
Sand Point
The Sand Point Lighthouse is located in Ludington Park at Escanaba, on the north shore of Lake Michigan. It was built in 1867 at the waters edge and first lit May 13, 1868 warning the ships off Sand Point and the sand reef which reached out into Little Bay De Noc. In 1939 the U.S. Coast Guard took control of the lighthouse, making several alterations to the original structure.
Fortunately, when they discontinued service, the Sand Point Lighthouse was leased back to the Delta County Historical Society and restored to
its original state.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
