The Back Story:
Sandy Hook
The Sandy Hook lighthouse is the oldest standing light tower in the United States. Since 1764, the lighthouse’s guiding beam has befriended innumerable vessels as they have passed in or out of New York’s great harbor. The original tower still stands, with huge masonry walls that are 7 feet thick at the base. The light continues to aid the mariner, as it has faithfully done for the last 246 years.
About The Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a
publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
