The Back Story:
Wind Point
The Wind Point Light Station was constructed in 1880 by the U.S. Lighthouse Service, which later merged with the Coast Guard. The tower stands 108-feet tall and has 144 iron steps inside. When visibility was less than five miles, foghorns, operated by 40 lbs. of air pressure through harmonica-like reeds, sounded for ten miles over the lake. In 1924, the light station was the second on the Great Lakes to be electrified. By 1964, the light house was fully automated remaining an active aid to navigation.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
