The Back Story:
Lincoln Memorial
Over Lincoln’s Head are these words:
“In this temple, As in the hearts of the people,
For whom he saved the Union,
The memory of Abraham Lincoln, Is enshrined forever.”
The Lincoln Memorial honors the life of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. It’s located in Potomac Park, Washington, D.C. The Memorial was designed by Henry Bacon; the style is that of a Greek Doric temple with 36 enormous columns. Inside, is a huge statue of Lincoln sitting. The memorial began construction in 1914 and was dedicated in 1922. The Lincoln Memorial is also pictured on the reverse side of the U.S. Penny & Five Dollar Bill.
