The Back Story:

The "Party of The Common Man"

A donkey, always facing to the left to signify liberalism, is the traditional symbol of the Democratic Party, the oldest of America’s two major contemporary political parties. The party was founded in 1792 by opponents of the elitist Federalist party, and Thomas Jefferson was the first Democratic president.
Democrats think of their party’s icon as humble, smart and brave although its connection with the Democratic party first appeared in the 1828 presidential campaign when Andrew Jackson’s opponents called him a “jackass” and he adopted the image to symbolize his strong will. By 1880 the easily recognizable donkey had become a well-established symbol for the party.
