The Back Story:
Manhole Covers - Industrial Art for Urban Landscapes
Some manhole covers, like this striking design manufactured in Louisville, Ky. in the late 1800s, had intricate ventilation openings that today would not meet safety regulations for pedestrian traffic.
City walkers seeking aesthetics in the midst of urban traffic can find it in the decorative surface patterns of manhole covers beneath their feet. The removable cast iron lids that adorn streets and sidewalks in municipalities around the world conceal and protect a subterranean world of conduits for water, power and various other utility systems. The term “manhole” describes a shaft large enough for a person to pass through, and originally referred to the access holes permitting between-deck passage on sailing ships.
