The Back Story:
Nashia, New Hampshire - Stands Out
Manhole covers made by Nashua Foundries Inc., for the city of Nashua, are triangles. While most manhole covers are round, they’ve been making the triangular variety since 1919. The foundry’s president says,” …that makes Nashua stand out, because so far as I can tell, nowhere else in the world can say this.” The triangular covers point in the direction of flow. If it’s not, it’s a quick signal that something’s wrong. Some people even say the triangular shape keeps them from rattling, just as a tripod steadies a camera. “It’s definitely the end of an era”, said a city official. State safety standards now require that any damaged triangular cover be replaced with a round one.
